- SRWare Iron for Mac is a real alternative. The browser is based on the Chromium-source and offers the same features as Chrome - but without the critical points that the privacy concern. Hide your real IP address and protect your privacy while online!
- Jan 10, 2010 Yes, I'll send you a ppc mac if you want! Until then, how do you want us to report bugs? How else can we help? (1.) Where to obtain source code? (2.) Can I suggest that you remove space(s) from the name, that is: SRWareIron.app (NOT 'SRWare Iron.app').
The nice people in Germany that give us the Chromium-based browser, Iron, have seen fit to upgrade the application, to revision level 5.0.381. Those following along with the progress of Iron will recognize that it is only 0.00.001 points up from the last revision, which was generally solid but broke several (as reported by others) extensions.
SRWare Iron is a well-designed and user-oriented web browser, based on Chromium, that presents itself as an alternative to the popular web browser. A privacy-oriented web browser for everyday use.
For my usage, I had returned to 5.0.326, which was listed as an alpha release, but rarely gave me any problem, despite the problems reported by others ( I don’t totally discount their problems, but I sometimes wonder about those that have trouble explaining what has happened – many times these problems seem to be because of some other error). The 5.0.380 release, though listed as stable, broke a couple of the extensions I use frequently, so I reverted.
Now, the latest revision is released again as stable, and I see a few gripes on the SRWare forum, but nothing that I would place as credible. The revision appears to be stable, with no crashes, and no problems with all the various extensions I had been using, and a few new ones I am now running.
The speed seems on par with the last couple of revisions and my only thought about the release is I am wondering why the features of the equivalent Chrome stable version are not being implemented – Chrome 5 has has a stable version with the PDF viewer and Flash player built in. These inclusions would be in keeping with the security nature of Iron, so their inclusion would not be blasphemy, after all.
From the SRWare Forums –
We released Iron 5.0.381 now, which brings some nice improvements since Iron 5.0.381 like better stability and an improved adblocker.
The changelog in detail:
– much more stable than Iron 5.0.380
– improved website-compatibility
– improved adblocker ( no more placeholder-errors at some ads)
– better language support

Though the previous versions of Iron were sometimes based on beta code from Chromium, it is not that way now. perhaps we will see an update with some of the Chromium 6 additions appearing soon, but SRWare is very closed about announcements, and does not seem to develop on a set schedule.
Fortunately, this version is out, and, should any big problems appear, they will be repaired with moderate speed, and for those impatient souls, I suggest keeping a copy of 5.0.326 alpha on hand.

SRWare Iron is a Chromium-based web browser developed by the German company SRWare.[7] It primarily aims to eliminate usage tracking and other privacy-compromising functionality that the Google Chrome browser includes.[8] Iron ships with certain Chromium privacy options switched on by default, it provides some additional features that distinguish it from Google Chrome.[1][8]
Development history[edit]
Iron was first released as a beta version on 18 September 2008,[1] 16 days after Google Chrome's initial release.
On 26 May 2009 a Preview-Release (Pre-Alpha) of Iron came out for Linux.[9] And on 7 January 2010 a beta version for macOS was released.[10]
On 11 August 2010, Microsoft updated the BrowserChoice.eu website in order to include Iron as one of the possible choices.[11][12]
More recent versions of Iron have been released since then, which has gained the features of the underlying Chromium codebase, including Google Chrome theme support, a user agent switcher, an extension system, integrated Adblocker and improved Linux support.[1]

Differences from Chrome[edit]
The following Google Chrome features are not present in Iron:[13][14][15]
Srware Iron For Mac Os
- RLZ identifier, an encoded string sent together with all queries to Google.[16]
- Google search access on startup for users with Google as default search.[16][17]
- Google-hosted error pages when a server is not present.
- Google Updater automatic installation.
- DNS pre-fetching,[18] because it could potentially be used by spammers.[19][20][21]
- Automatic address bar search suggestions.
- Opt-in sending of both browser usage statistics and crash information to Google.
- Google Native Client.[22]
Added features include:
- An ad blocker.
- A user agent switcher.
- Opt-in blocking of other background communications, such as extension, GPU blacklist, and certificate revocation updates.[23]
- Increased number of recent page thumbnails shown on the New Tab page.
Criticism[edit]
In December 2014, Lifehacker said that Iron offers little that is not available by simply configuring Google Chrome's privacy settings.[24] However, the_simple_computer wrote that Iron removes the Google Native Client, Google's custom navigation and error pages and other similar features.[22]
In October 2014, the_simple_computer wrote that even though SRWare Iron released under the BSD licence, the latest source code publicly available at the time was incomplete and for version 6, even though the binaries were on version 14;[22] source code was moved to RapidShare in 2013, with external access blocked, effectively making the program 'entirely closed source'.[22] In the same year, Lifehacker wrote that SRWare had not released the browser's source code for years.[24] In 2015, SRWare temporarily resumed releasing the source code for the browser.[25]
